A Note from Our President

Dear Friends,

As President and CEO of Beechwood Continuing Care, I am proud to be part of an organization that has set a standard of excellence in senior care throughout its history and look forward to continue its legacy.

Beechwood Continuing Care has been an integral part of WNY for over 50 years and has worked diligently to build an extraordinary reputation for placing the needs of its residents above all else.

As a not-for-profit faith-based organization, resident quality of life and dignity is always our first and foremost consideration. We are committed to preserve their independence, freedom of choice, joy, contentment and sense of purpose.

As a recognized leader in innovative senior care in WNY, Beechwood was the first to introduce culture changing person-centered care in its assisted living and skilled nursing communities. We call it “Welcome Home!”

We invite you to learn more about Beechwood Continuing Care and all it has to offer to seniors in our community.

Daniel P. O’Neill
President & CEO

Our Continuum

Beechwood Continuing Care was first established through the vision of a group of individuals and Methodist ministers. They recognized there was a need for a not-for-profit faith-based community that served the physical, social and spiritual needs of seniors in WNY. Upon the purchase of a parcel of 24 acres of land in Getzville, the Beechwood Residence opened its doors in 1964. Less than ten years later, the Beechwood Nursing Home admitted its first residents. (In 2006, both became known collectively as the Beechwood Homes.)

Today, the Beechwood Homes has the distinction of being the first nursing home in WNY to transition from a traditional institutional model to a person-centered care model, complete with households and neighborhoods. We call our person-centered initiative – “Welcome Home.”

Beechwood was the first nursing home in Erie County to partner with Hospice Buffalo to offer hospice support to our residents. Recently, we have partnered with Hospice Buffalo to create a designated hospice unit for those individuals in Erie County who need skilled nursing hospice care.

In 1977, the Blocher Homes, an assisted living facility with a similar mission based history, joined the Beechwood family. The Blocher Homes was established in 1904. Its noble lineage includes founder, John Blocher, a wealthy industrialist. He established the Blocher Homes to ensure that aging men, and women, who could no longer live on their own, would have a true “home” where caring support was available. John Blocher was well known for his philanthropic endeavors and love for family, as well as the famous memorial monument located in Forest Lawn Cemetery, built in memory of his beloved son.

Noting a growing need for short-term rehabilitation within the senior community, Wesley Rehabilitation Center opened its doors in 1996. Beechwood, known for its exceptional physical therapy professionals, built a state of the art rehab center. Located within the Beechwood Homes in a separate wing, Wesley offers 27 private rooms and its own private dining room. Over 800 patients of all ages are treated annually, with the majority returning to their homes in the community.

Opened in 2000, Asbury Pointe Independent Retirement Community boasts award winning design in senior living. With 110 apartments, Asbury offers a luxurious yet neighborly lifestyle. Known for its extraordinary decor and attention to personal service, it is the perfect alternative for seniors who no longer want the demands of owning a home and instead want the freedom and security of retirement community living. As part of the Beechwood continuum, residents have priority admission into our other communities.
Community Partner

Beechwood has been the recipient of numerous awards, commendations and accreditations. These include the Amherst Chamber of Commerce Commitment to Excellence Award in Health and Health Services and the Better Business Bureau's prestigious Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. Beechwood has partnered with Hospice Buffalo to provide in-patient care in a “household,” allowing for better treatment for each individual according to their needs.

Those associated with Beechwood Continuing Care take pride in past accomplishments, and the Homes are committed to creatively meeting the needs of its residents and the community.

What is Welcome Home?

In 2002, BCC began its first steps in initiating a bold, new program to position our organization for culture change and move forward in eliminating the institutional environment from our assisted living and nursing home communities. This on-going effort is geared toward producing a positive and meaningful impact upon our residents’ quality of life as well as their health.

Welcome Home incorporates ideas from many person-centered care models across the country as well as some new ideas of our own!

Welcome Home includes both a physical as well as philosophical transformation. Blocher Homes and Beechwood residents enjoy open dining where they choose their mealtime and where they sit. At Beechwood Homes, we have eliminated nursing stations and long corridors and replace them with households where 12–18 residents share a country kitchen, dining room and living room with a fireplace. Each household is autonomous and functions based on the wishes of the residents and is carried out by their household team. In addition, residents and their families enjoy neighborhood centers which include a bistro, library/multimedia center and entertainment centers as well as a beautiful campus.

And most important is our staff. Person-centered care can not succeed without the commitment of your staff...and our staff are extraordinary. Welcome Home has re-invigorated our staff and provided them a philosophy of care that is truly driven by the residents and based on development of strong relationships with each other. Through extensive education and training in the team directed approach to care, our staff are often able to anticipate our residents needs before they know it themselves!
